South Sudan is in crisis. We need your help.
The situation in South Sudan is critical, with millions fleeing their homes and losing their belongings, crops and livestock. Vulnerable families should not have to live in these conditions – please help support our relief effort.
Grandmother Nyakat and her family are no strangers to suffering.
In 2013, their village was attacked, and their home burned to the ground. They were forced to flee – spending some time suriving on nothing but water lilies from a dirty river.
Her grandson, Leek, was only four years old when he witnessed his mother being shot and killed by the attackers. Shortly after, JAM made their first visit to the Thiak family.
Her family slept under a tree, with no protection or viable food source.
Nyakat’s grandaughter, Nyagut Ateny, climbed the tree, picking wild fruit to share amongst the family. Nyagut was praised by the family; she was their caregiver, nurturer and seen as the ‘mother’ to the whole family.
Sadly, the Thiak family was dealt another cruel blow as Nyagut Ateny succumbed to illness and died shortly before JAM returned.
As is often the case, it was impossible to determine the cause of her death.
Disease from dirty water, malaria and malnutrition are amongst the most probable causes, and cases are rising rapidly since the declaration of famine in South Sudan.
Thousands of other families share similar stories to Nyakat in this oil-rich, yet war-ravaged land. With the declaration of famine, the humanitarian crisis worsens. The people of South Sudan need help.
Families supported to date.
Based on sustained donations of £120 per family per month.
However, millions more are still suffering.
There are over 1 million starving men, women and children in South Sudan, with a further five million people – more than 40% of South Sudan’s population – in desperate need of food. A single £5 donation feeds a child for an entire month.Make a donation
